Announcement and Call for Abstracts
    
                        SYMPOSIUM ON MESHFREE METHODS

   To be held at the Fifth U.S. National Congress on Computational Mechanics
 Wednesday-Friday, August 4-6, 1999, University of Colorado at Boulder, CO, USA

   Symposium Organizers: W. K. Liu, T. Belytschko, J. S. Chen and L. Schwer

During the last five years, there have been important advances in the development of 
the next generation of numerical methods, generally called meshfree methods.
While progress in the fundamentals and applications of meshfree methods has been
rapid, many challenges in this class of methods remain.  This Symposium is organized
to provide a forum for discussion on recent progress and future directions on
meshfree methods.

Contributions are solicited in the following areas:

o  New techniques in meshfree methods
o  Fundamental difficulties in meshfree methods
o  Improvements in meshfree methods
o  Mathematical analysis of meshfree methods
o  Applications of meshfree methods
o  Implementation issues in meshfree methods
o  Special properties and numerical performance of meshfree methods
o  Meshfree methods for challenging engineering problems
o  Meshfree adaptivity methods
o  Parallel computation in meshfree methods
o  Identification of future opportunities

If you are interested in contributing to this Symposium, please submit a 
one-page abstract of up to 400 words by e-mail to J. S. Chen listed below
on or before January 15, 1999.  Notification of acceptance will be given
by e-mail to the corresponding author. If the abstract is co-authored it must 
identify the e-mail of the corresponding author.  All correspondence will take 
place by e-mail. A final version of the Abstract for inclusion in the printed 
book of Abstracts may be submitted before May 15, 1999.  This final form is 
to be sent directly to the Congress e-mail address following the instructions
posted on the Web site.
 
Abstracts may be submitted in one of three forms:  (1) plain text,
(2) TeX source compatible with the Plain TeX format, or (3) Word 6 or 7 
document in Rich Text Format (RTF).  Please do not include figures or graphics.
Avoid equations in title or text.  Greek letters are acceptable if
the abstract is submitted in TeX or Word. For samples of forms (1) and (2)
