Early August weather in the Denver-Boulder area is on the average moderately hot and dry, with average daytime maxima of 86-90F degrees (28-30C). At night it cools down to 55-65F degrees (15-18C). However, weather near mountains is highly unpredictable; it is said of Colorado that "if you don't like the weather, wait 30 minutes". Thus "averages" should be not taken too seriously. In the "monsoon season" which begins in early July, local showers (ocassionally heavy) and thunderstorms are possible during afternoons and evenings, so bring appropriate raingear. Heat waves are also possible; bring a sun hat, sunglasses and suntan for protection against the high altitude sun.
Boulder is at 5,500ft (1,600m) altitude. Refrain from strenous physical activity the first two days (perhaps longer depending on age and state of health) until your red blood cells build up. Drink plenty of (non-alcoholic) fluids throughout the day to help the aclimatization process.
Attire is informal in summer during the day. Boulder is a gateway to Rocky Mountain national and state parks and during August it overflows with tourists and yuppies. A person dressed formally in suit and tie looks out of place, like a pedestrian in Los Angeles. Attire at formal evening functions is more conservative.
