Announcement of the
John Argyris Award
for the best paper by α young researcher in the field of
Computational Mechanics

It is our pleasure to announce the fourth competition for the John Argyris Award for the best paper by a young researcher in the field of Computational Mechanics. This Award has been initiated to honor Professor John Argyris whose research work for more than 50 years had a pioneering impact on computational mechanics both in theory and in practice. The award recognizes his significant contribution both to the field and to the international journal Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering, of which he was a founding editor and editor-in-chief for 30 years, and is sponsored by Elsevier, publisher of the Journal.

The award certificate and a prize of 2000 euros will be conferred on the winner by the President of the International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM). The presentation is scheduled to be made at the VIII World Congress on Computational Mechanics (WCCM VIII) to be held in Venice, Italy from 30 June-5 July 2008.

Papers to be judged: Each applicant may submit a paper accepted for publication not earlier than 31 March 2006 in the journal Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering. The papers are to be submitted electronically, by 31 March 2008, to Professor Eugenio Onate, at the following address:

Professor Eugenio Onate

CIMNE, Barcelona, Spain
e-mail: iacm@cimne.upc.edu

The winner will be notified by the president of IACM during May 2008.

Where a paper has more than one author, the part contributed by the applicant is to be clearly indicated and certified by the applicant's supervisor or Head of Department.

All applicants must be under the age of 35 on 31 March 2008.

Selection procedure: An international Judging Panel nominated by IACM will select the winner. The Panel's decision is final.

Call for Abstracts
IASS-IACM 2008, 6th ICCSSS, “Spanning Nano to Mega”
6th International Conference on Computation of Shell and Spatial Structures
28-31 May 2008
Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, USA
http://iassiacm2008.us

OBJECTIVES AND THEMES:  To address a broad interpretation of “Shell and Spatial Structures” the conference will consider computation for any long-span, lightweight, fabric, or thin-walled structures:

  1. at a variety of scales -- spanning nano to mega,
  2. in a diversity of application fields, and
  3. in both technology and nature.

In addition, the themes of the conference sessions will include most of those addressed at the Fifth Conference but with new emphasis on the related areas of

  1. computational morphogenesis,
  2. computational materials,
  3. innovative materials,
  4. biological structures, and
  5. nano- and micro-structures.

Further information about the broad range of topics to be covered and details of the conference can be found at the conference website: http://iassiacm2008.us

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS:  By 15 December 2007, please submit one-page abstracts in the form of either .pdf or (MS Word) .doc files as e-mail attachments to info@iassiacm2008.us.  Accepted contributors, announced by approximately 15 January, will be asked to submit by 15 March an extended abstract of up to 4 pages for the proceedings to be published on CD.  No full papers will be requested, although authors are encouraged to submit full papers to refereed international journals.
