The newly created Michigan Institute for Computational Discovery and Engineering (MICDE) is the focal point for the development and innovative use of mathematical algorithms and models on high performance computers to support basic scientific research, product development, and forecasting.

The MICDE is an initiative of the UM College of Engineering (CoE) and School of Information (UMSI), both of which can claim exceptional and broad expertise in CDE. Active research in CDE ranges from environmental and climate modeling to defense and homeland security, nuclear reactor simulation and high-energy density physics, materials and nano-science, biophysics, electrical and electronic design, transportation, geophysical modeling, structural engineering, healthcare engineering, modeling of large-scale engineering systems, information technology, data mining, social network analysis and visualization, and computational linguistics. MICDE works closely with Advanced Research Computing at U-M (ARC), a central unit in the Office of Research that encourages innovation in the use of advanced computing across the entire campus.

MICDE is seeking an Assistant Director to help guide the institute as we build and enrich the CDE community, provide new educational opportunities, promote collaboration across disciplines, and encourage the use of CDE inside and outside the University. The position involves working closely with faculty members; seeking new resources to support the institute?s goals; establishing and fostering partnerships in the public and private sectors; and coordinating internal meetings and communication.

The purpose of this position is to assist the MICDE Director and Associate Directors in developing the Institute's research and educational agenda and programs. The position reports to the Director of MICDE. Specific duties and responsibilities include:

- Support the MICDE research agenda, which includes administering current and future MICDE research programs and using knowledge of science, research, and business to coordinate grant and contract proposals.

- Work with the faculty and support personnel to coordinate new interdisciplinary research grants, such as program project grants, center grants, and multidisciplinary university research initiative grants.

- Steward long-term research and financial sponsors by facilitating relationships with funding agencies and expanding research and development (R & D) programs through state, regional and national contacts.

- Develop and cultivate the MICDE Industry Program and coordinate with other industrial affiliate programs on campus.

- Host and coordinate advisory boards and meetings related to MICDE research.

Note: salary is negotiable for exceptionally qualified candidates.

Required qualifications:
- Excellent oral and written communications skills
- Master's degree in engineering, science, or research-related discipline
- Experience and/or understanding of computational research.
- Experience with grant writing, proposal administration, or related work.
- Experience with industry programs with respect to supporting program partnerships, seeking industry funding, etc.
- Experience in a higher education research environment.
- Experience building and coordinating teams of faculty across disciplines
- Ability to grasp and synthesize information from unfamiliar academic disciplines

Desired qualifications:
- Doctoral degree in engineering, science, or research-related discipline.
