Research Scientist - Design Optimization of Functional Materials

UES, Inc. has an opportunity available for an entry level Scientist in the areas of topology optimization, multiphysics simulation and material programming, to work with our research team at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH.

The Research Scientist will be an active member of the Soft Matter Branch within the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate and Aerospace Systems Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory. The research project will focus on the development of optimization tools for patterning functional and structural material properties, with design objectives centered around the areas of 1) multifunctional origami structures, 2) soft electronics and 3) structural/electromagnetic optimization of 3D and conformal electromagnetic devices. High performance computing experience, knowledge of parallelization techniques and experience with gradient and non-gradient optimization techniques is desired. The successful candidate will develop design problems that address fundamental questions of material behavior and/or device reconfigurability. Experience with experimental test methods for mechanical or electromagnetic performance validation is also desired.
Excellent oral and written communication skills are a prerequisite for employment. The successful candidate will be self-motivated and capable of working independently, as well as an effective collaborator with researchers from different technical backgrounds.
Required Education:
• A PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Math, Physics, Materials Science, or related field of study.

Areas of Desired Technical Experience:
• This position is working on government projects and is requiring U.S. Citizenship
• Core understanding of optimization theory and experience with algorithm development
• Experience with design of mechanical or electromagnetic devices
• Technical computing experience (e.g. Matlab, Python, and commercial finite element packages)
• Multiphyiscs modeling experience
• Additive manufacturing (3D printing) experience
