Postdoctoral Researcher - Computational Mechanics of Materials
Livermore, CA
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
Science and Technology on a Mission!

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have multiple openings for Postdoctoral Research Staff Members to conduct basic and applied research. Advances in computational models of physical systems enable significant advances in our overall capabilities to address important problems. The work brings together computational mechanics of materials, high performance computing, and innovative connections to experimental methods. Capabilities are deployed both for focused studies and for treatment of complex coupled phenomena in more integrated applications. These positions are in the Computational Engineering Division (CED), within the Engineering Directorate.

Essential Duties
- Conduct research in a relevant discipline within computational engineering including the development of mathematical and computational models of engineered materials, devices, systems, or processes.
- Work with experimentalists on designing, implementing, and analyzing relevant experiments.
- Organize, analyze, and present data from research.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of research to address defined problems.
- Pursue independent, complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of engineers and scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars, and/or technical meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Recent PhD in Engineering or related field.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in a field related to solid mechanics or materials sciences.
- Experience with software development using scripting languages or C/C++/Fortran in a UNIX environment.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and conduct independent research projects as demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications.
- Demonstrated proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Demonstrated initiative and interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience with engineering analysis, typically through finite element and/or finite volume techniques, and associated productivity tools.
- Familiarity with productivity tools for team software development environments.
- Ability to participate meaningfully in experimental activities.
