Under the leadership of the USACM Executive Council (EC),
USACM has made a significant impact on Computational Mechanics.
The very successful USACM National Congress in Boulder,
August 1999, demonstrated USACM's continuing evolution toward
becoming the preeminent computational mechanics organization
in the United States. Moreover, working closely together
with the International Association for Computational Mechanics
(IACM), which represents 21 national and regional associations,
USACM also strengthens its influence, importance and leadership
as an international computational mechanics organization..
We thank Mark Shephard for his many valuable contributions
to our Association.
It is my pleasure to inform you that the first USACM student
Chapters has been formed at the University of Texas, Austin
and other student chapters are underway. If you are interested
in forming a student chapter, please click here
and follow "the guidelines for forming a USACM Student Chapter."
Four technical committees have been established to foster
new research directions, developments and their applications.
Detailed committee activity reports will be reported separately
through the USACM web page and electronic digest, the following
are recent highlights:
The Committee on Meshfree Methods,
chaired by J. S. Chen and co-chaired by Mark Christon,
has supported meshfree research activities by co-sponsoring
the Workshop on Meshfree Methods, held in Chicago, Illinois,
June 11-13, 2000. This workshop was jointly sponsored
by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Defense
Advanced Projects Research Agency (DARPA). The workshop
featured 3 keynote presentations, 24 invited presentations,
with a total of 70 participants from industry, national
laboratories, government agencies, and universities around
the world.
The Committee on Verification
and Validation in Computational Solid Mechanics
has submitted a proposal to ASME to become a Standards
Committee under ASME's ANSI approved standards process.
The Committee will sponsor a two session symposium at
the 6th USACM National Congress as an open forum for informing
the computational mechanics community of its activities
and obtaining feedback.
USACM
was founded, and continues to operate successfully, as an
all-volunteer organization, with the EC members providing
their time, and the services of their staff, to conduct the
business of USACM. Some recent changes have provided an impetus
for reevaluating the manner in which USACM conducts its business,
and to consider how best to organize for the future. With
the full support of USACM, it is my belief that a report detailing
a set of recommendations will be produced and voted on at
the USACM National Congress to be held at the Hyatt Regency,
Dearborn Meeting, August 1-3, 2001. Should you have any suggestions,
please do not hesitate to contact me.
