High-Fidelity Aeroelasticity Simulations for Rotating Systems

Abstract

With the advent of the U.S. military’s Future Vertical Lift program and the surge of civilian applications in unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and Urban/Advanced Air Mobility (U/AAM), the ability to accurately and efficiently analyze the aeromechanics of novel flight vehicle designs with rotating systems has once again become a major focus of research. Rotating systems such as helicopter rotors, tilt rotors and large wind turbines must be both designed and evaluated using aeroelastic predictions where the causal physics are inherently nonlinear. The vertical lift and wind energy communities have developed a range of predictive methods to address these rotating systems. This seminar will discuss current and future methods of aeroelastic predictions using high-fidelity aerodynamics, namely CFD/CSD prediction methods and CFD-based dual-solver hybrid aeroelastic methods. Validation and sensitivity analysis of aeroelastic simulations with temporal- and spatialvariations, such as rotating systems, will also be explored.

Biography

After 17 years in industry, Marilyn Smith joined the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology as their first woman faculty member in 1997. She is now a full professor and Director of their Vertical Lift Research Center where she also leads the Army/Navy/NASA Vertical Lift Research Center of Excellence and a new NASA University Leadership Initiative in Urban Air Mobility. Dr. Smith performs research in the areas of non-linear computational aeromechanics and unsteady aerodynamics for which she has over 200 publications and won multiple technical awards. She is a Fellow of the AIAA and Royal Aeronautical Society and Technical Fellow of the Vertical Flight Society (VFS). After numerous VFS leadership positions, she is currently the Technical Director of the VFS.
