Phase-field modeling of multiphase flows: Fluid dynamics and elastocapillary FSI

Prof. Hector Gomez, Purdue University

Abstract:

Over the past decade, there has been significant progress in multiphase flow modeling and simulation driven by new theoretical and computational advances in phase-field modeling. These developments have improved our capabilities to model multiphase systems with and without phase transformations. In this talk, I will discuss how the Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard equations are enabling high-fidelity computations of two component flows with especial emphasis on problems that involve contact lines with rigid and deformable solids. I will also discuss Direct van der Waals simulation (DVS), a new computational paradigm to study liquid-vapor phase transformations. Notably, DVS considers the non-equilibrium thermodynamics at liquid-vapor interfaces and does not rely on any phenomenological model for phase transformation. I will finalize the talk discussing new opportunities for multiphase flow modeling using phase-field methods.

Upcoming Talks:

Friday, May 1: Prof. Jian-Xun Wang, Cornell University
