Large Scale Structural Systems and Optimal Design Industrial Colloquium

The TTA Large Scale Structural Systems and Optimal Design will host an industrial colloquium to bring together researchers from academia with industrial research scientists. We are proud to announce to kick-off the event in November with talks from General Motor corporation and ANSYS.

Structural Optimization for Industrial Applications using ANSYS

Speakers

Georgios Michailidis & Sebastian Stahn, Ansys Inc.

Abstract

Structural Optimization (SO) has become nowadays an indispensable part of the design process for innovative and competitive products. During the last decades, it has proven its effectiveness in providing valuable insight for the efficient design of industrial parts, incorporating several manufacturing constraints in the optimization process. Moreover, the recent advancements in Additive Manufacturing have significantly extended its applicability thanks to the increased geometric freedom.

The industrial application of SO reveals new challenges compared to traditional test-cases examined in scientific literature. For example, manufacturing constraints related to the functionality of the part may need to be respected for highly complex geometries. In addition, large-scale models and computationally demanding physics and criteria need to be computed in acceptable time and accuracy.

ANSYS disposes a variety of SO methods [1], integrated in complete workflows that permit the flowless re-design of optimized parts. Dedicated methods and tools for accelerating the optimization process are used, focusing either on the FE analysis [2] and/or on the efficiency of the gradient’s computation. We present typical examples covering the above topics.
